What's on a standard UK payslip?

Under the Employment Rights Act 1996 (as amended in April 2019), every UK employee must receive an itemised pay statement on or before pay day. HMRC and ACAS define the minimum line items below.

Gross pay & earnings section

  • Gross Pay — the total before any deductions, for the pay period.
  • Hours worked — required for staff whose pay varies with hours (since April 2019).
  • Bonuses, commission, overtime — itemised separately when paid.
  • Statutory pay — SSP (Statutory Sick Pay), SMP, SPP, ShPP, SAP shown when applicable.
  • Year-to-date Gross — running total since 6 April (start of the UK tax year).

Statutory deductions

  • PAYE Income Tax — calculated using your tax code (e.g. 1257L for the 2025/26 personal allowance of £12,570). Bands: 20% basic, 40% higher (£50,271–£125,140), 45% additional (over £125,140). Scottish taxpayers see code S; Welsh, code C.
  • National Insurance (Class 1) — 8% main rate between £12,570 and £50,270, then 2% above. NI category letter (A, B, C, H, M, etc.) shown.
  • Student Loan — Plan 1, Plan 2, Plan 4 (Scotland), Plan 5, Postgraduate. Each has its own threshold and 9% (or 6% PG) rate.

Voluntary deductions

  • Pension contributions — auto-enrolment minimum is 5% employee + 3% employer (qualifying earnings: £6,240–£50,270).
  • Salary sacrifice — pension, cycle-to-work, electric vehicle scheme, childcare vouchers (legacy).
  • Trade union dues, season ticket loans, give-as-you-earn (GAYE) charity.

Mandatory employer details

  • Employer name and PAYE reference
  • Employee name, NI number, and tax code
  • Pay period, pay date, and payment method (BACS, cheque)
  • Employee's net pay (take-home) for the period
  • YTD totals: gross, tax, NI, pension

When you'll need a UK payslip

1. UK mortgage applications

UK lenders — Halifax, Nationwide, NatWest, Lloyds, Santander, Barclays, HSBC and challengers like Habito or Atom — all ask for the last three months of payslips plus the most recent P60 to evidence affordability and DTI.

2. Tenancy referencing

Letting agents and reference firms (HomeLet, Goodlord, Rightmove Reference) routinely request three months of payslips before approving a tenancy.

3. UK and Schengen visa applications

UK Visas & Immigration and Schengen consulates accept three to six months of UK payslips as proof of stable employment for visit, work, and skilled-worker visa categories.

4. Replacing lost or missing payslips

If your employer's payroll system has lost old payslips (or you've changed jobs), you can recreate slips from your P60 figures and contract terms for personal records.

5. Self-employed income statements

Sole traders pay tax through Self Assessment — they don't get PAYE payslips. But many lenders will accept a monthly income statement (drawings + retained profit) plus an SA302 from HMRC.

6. Switching jobs / probation negotiation

UK employers ask for the last three months of payslips during background checks (run by Veremark, HireRight, Sterling) to verify your last drawn salary before extending a final offer.

UK payslip — frequently asked questions

Is this UK payslip format HMRC-compliant?
Yes. The format includes every component required by the Employment Rights Act 1996 and HMRC guidance: gross pay, PAYE income tax, National Insurance, pension contributions, tax code, NI category and year-to-date totals.
How is PAYE calculated on a UK payslip?
PAYE is calculated on taxable pay using your tax code (e.g. 1257L for the 2025/26 personal allowance of £12,570). Tax bands are 20% (basic), 40% (higher) and 45% (additional). Scotland uses a separate band system.
What is National Insurance on a payslip?
Class 1 National Insurance is deducted from earnings above the Primary Threshold (£12,570). The main rate is 8% on earnings between Primary Threshold and Upper Earnings Limit (£50,270), and 2% above that. Employers also pay 13.8% Class 1 secondary NI.
Does this payslip include pension auto-enrolment?
Yes. You can show employee pension contributions (default 5% under auto-enrolment) and employer contributions (default 3%). The slip displays both figures alongside qualifying earnings.
Can I generate a payslip with overtime, commission and bonus?
Yes. Add custom earnings rows for overtime, commission, bonus, holiday pay and statutory pay (SSP, SMP, SPP). Each line is itemised on the PDF.
Can a sole trader use this generator?
Self-employed sole traders pay tax via Self Assessment, not PAYE, and don't receive payslips. However, you can use this generator to create an income statement showing monthly drawings — useful for mortgage applications and tenancy agreements.
